The 28 mm (1.10 in) question

Twenty-eight millimeters is where road tire thinking has settled. Wider than the 25 mm (0.98 in) standard of a decade ago, it runs lower pressures, deforms around road surface rather than bouncing over it, and gives up remarkably little speed for a large gain in comfort and grip.

Check your frame and brake clearance before assuming 28 fits — and remember a tire measures wider on a wide rim.

Race compound, and what it costs you

Softer rubber grips better and rolls faster, and it wears out sooner. On a bike doing 200 km a week that is a real cost. Schwalbe makes harder-wearing tires in the same family for exactly that reason.

V-Guard

Schwalbe’s protection belt for its lighter tires — protection at low weight, rather than the heavier armor of a commuting tire. A fast tire with a protection belt is a compromise both ways, and an honest one.
