The towball nose weight is the number that decides how many bikes fit
The limit is almost never the rack — it is the nose weight your towball is rated for, a figure printed on the towbar plate and in the vehicle documents, against which the rack's own weight plus the bikes must be checked before anything is loaded. We compare the payload each manufacturer states, the nose weight the rack itself consumes empty, whether the frame tilts far enough to open the boot with bikes mounted, and how large the rack is once folded for storage.

The number of bikes allowed is the structuring limit. Adding one bike beyond it exceeds the towbar's approved load.
A two-bike rack is lighter, shorter and puts far less strain on the towbar. It is the most common format.
The rack's own weight adds to the bikes', and the total must stay under the vehicle's permitted noseweight. The stated empty weight decides how many bikes can really be carried.
The vehicle manufacturer states it for the towball, and it includes the weight of the rack. That is the limit never to exceed.
Only if the total stays under the permitted load. Two e-bikes often exceed the limit of an ordinary two-bike rack.
The rack has to repeat the lighting and the registration plate as soon as it hides the vehicle's own. That is a requirement, not an option.
That is exactly why the rack carries its own light board. Check that no bike covers it once loaded.
Wheels strapped, frames held by the arms, plus an overall safety strap. Check the tension again after a few kilometers.
An arm clamping a carbon frame in the wrong place can damage it. Models that hold by the wheels avoid that risk.
Computers, bags and bottles come loose while driving. Anything not bolted on has to come off.
