The best bike brake pads and shoes for 2026

Disc pads split into two compounds that behave differently rather than better or worse: resin (organic) is quieter and bites well when cold but fades sooner on a long descent, while sintered (metallic) resists heat and wet far better and is noisier until it is warm. The other half of the choice is shape — pads are cut to a specific caliper family and are not interchangeable. We compare compound, caliper compatibility, cooling fin designs, and rim brake shoe compounds for non-disc bikes.

For which need, in brake pads and shoes

Keeping spare sets

Pads worn down to the backing plate destroy the rotor. Having spares avoids riding past the threshold for want of a part.

SHIMANO LK091013ZI4187

Braking in the wet without squealing

An organic compound bites cold and fades in water; a sintered one does the opposite and sings. The stated compound decides the behavior in the weather you actually ride in.

SHIMANO LK091013ZI4187

For whom, within brake pads and shoes

Disc brakes
Compatibility with the caliper family is a strict constraint. An approximate pad will not fit, or rubs permanently.
Rim brakes
Blocks are sensitive to the rim material: aluminum and carbon require different compounds, without exception.
Mountain use
Long descents wear pads very fast and make them hot. A spare set in the bag is a realistic precaution.

What each advantage costs, on brake pads and shoes

Organic compound against sintered
Organic bites harder from cold and wears faster; sintered lasts, needs to come up to temperature and makes more noise.
Life against rotor wear
Very hard compounds last a long time and wear the rotor more. The calculation is made on the whole, not on the pad alone.
The brake brand's pad or a pattern pad
Pad geometry governs its alignment in the caliper. A badly dimensioned generic rubs or bears unevenly.

Before buying brake pads and shoes

When should pads be changed?

Before the friction material reaches its minimum thickness. A pad worn to the backing plate scores the rotor irreversibly.

Can I touch pads with my fingers?

The grease from your skin contaminates the friction material. Handle them by the edges, and never with greasy hands.

How do I bed in new pads?

With a series of progressive stops without coming to a complete halt, to lay an even film on the rotor. Without bedding in, braking stays poor.

My brakes squeal, why?

Contamination, a warped rotor, or badly bedded-in pads. Contamination of the friction material is often permanent.

Organic or sintered?

Organic bites well from cold and wears fast; sintered lasts, copes better with heat on descents and makes more noise.

Are rim blocks universal?

No: the compound depends on the rim material. An aluminum-specific block on a carbon rim destroys it.

Do both sides have to be changed?

Always in pairs and per wheel. Unevenly worn pads make the caliper work askew.

Do new pads need bedding in?

Yes: a dozen progressive stops lay the transfer layer on the rotor and give the system its bite. Braking hard on the first descent glazes the pad.

What to remember about brake pads and shoes

Never touch the friction material with your fingers: the grease from your skin contaminates it for good. Bed in with progressive stops without coming to a halt, always change in pairs — and a pad worn to the backing plate scores the rotor irreversibly.
