Thule UpRide roof carrier, frame-free vs VDP Travel boot rack, 3 bikes

On the roof, or on the tailgate?

Neither of these needs a towbar, and that is where the similarity ends. One holds a single bike by its front wheel, high up. The other holds three against the tailgate and blocks the boot.

Which of the two, for which rider

Buy the UpRide roof carrier, frame-free

The carrier for a bike you would not clamp. No frame contact at all is why Thule states it as carbon-safe, and carbon frames carry manufacturer clamping limits that some makers make prohibitions. It needs crossbars, which are frequently the larger purchase.

No amazon.com listing was found for this one. We hold references for other markets but none for the United States, so it may not be buyable here — which is the first thing to weigh against anything below.

Three bikes, 45 kg (99.2 lb) published, no towbar and no roof bars. Nothing else here carries a family for this money. The costs are real and predictable: the boot is inaccessible while loaded, and the plate and lights are obscured.

The questions riders ask

Do I need roof bars for the Thule?

Yes, and they are a separate purchase. Many cars have roof rails; the crossbars that span them frequently cost more than the bike carrier itself. Price the bars first.

Is a boot rack legal with bikes on it?

It depends where you are. Once bikes obscure the number plate and lights, most European countries require a repeated plate and a lighting board. The rules are national and they change — read them for each country on your route.

What is the practical risk with a roof rack?

Height. A bike on the roof adds around 130 cm (51.2 in) to the vehicle, and car parks, drive-throughs and height barriers are where that gets remembered — at low speed, expensively.
