SKS GERMANY SPEEDROCKER mudguard set, 28 inch vs BALOU MTB mudguard set, 24–29 inch

Bolted on, or clipped on?

The reason most people ride without mudguards is that their frame has no mounting eyelets. These two answer that question in opposite ways, and neither publishes the figure that actually decides fit.

Which of the two, for which rider

Buy the SPEEDROCKER mudguard set, 28 inch

The proper set, from the manufacturer this category is built around, and made in Germany — which on a component whose usual failure is a broken stay rather than a broken guard is a parts-availability argument. It publishes a wheel size and not a tire clearance, so ask the seller for that figure.

Buy the MTB mudguard set, 24–29 inch

The answer for a frame that cannot take a bolted guard, and one set covers 24 to 29 inch wheels — most of a household. It covers less than a full-length guard, and nothing else fits a frame with no eyelets.

The questions riders ask

What actually decides whether a mudguard fits?

Tire clearance, not wheel size. A guard has to clear the tire by a few millimeters across its full width. Neither of these publishes a clearance figure, which is the real gap in both listings.

How much less do clip-on guards cover?

Roughly half. Full-length guards run from behind the bottom bracket to well down the back of the rear wheel; clip-on guards cover the middle. The difference shows up as a wet stripe up your back.

Where do I measure?

The gap between the tire and the underside of the fork crown, and between the tire and the seatstay bridge. Those two gaps decide whether a full-length guard goes on.
