Panaracer’s GravelKing X1 is the most fully specified tire in this hub, and the specification is a gravel-specific one.

What the manufacturer publishes

An aggressive yet fast-rolling pattern giving strong grip and mud shedding. BeadLock technology for easy mounting and exceptional bead security. An advanced AX-Alpha puncture-resistant layer and a high-density 120 TPI casing. The ZSG Gravel compound, formulated for consistent grip on wet and dry surfaces. TuffTex casing, tubeless ready, 40-622 / 700x40.

What you still need to buy

Tubeless is a system, not a tire. A tubeless-ready rim, tubeless-specific rim tape, valves with removable cores, and sealant. The tire is one of five parts, and going tubeless for the first time means all of them.

Mud shedding

An underrated specification on a gravel tire. A tread that packs with mud stops working entirely, and the spacing between knobs is what decides whether it clears. Panaracer naming it as a design goal is worth noting.

The 120 TPI casing

Between the supple road casings and the tough commuting ones — the right place for a tire that has to survive gravel and roll on tarmac.

The clearance check

Forty millimeters measures wider on a wide rim. Check your frame’s published clearance, and remember mudguards reduce it further.

The questions riders ask

What does tubeless ready mean?

The tire bead and casing are built to seal against a tubeless rim without an inner tube, with sealant inside. It needs a tubeless-ready rim, tubeless tape, valves with removable cores and sealant — the tire alone is not enough.

What is BeadLock for?

Panaracer describes it as making mounting easier and holding the bead securely. Seating a tubeless bead is the step that most often defeats people, so a system aimed at it is a real benefit.
