The Dunlop valve is the one most tube ranges forget, and this is the option for bikes that have it.

What the manufacturer publishes

Compatibility with several tire sizes including 40-609 (27 × 1.5) and 28-622. High manufacturer compatibility. Elastic butyl rubber. A Dunlop valve (Blitzventil) described as giving high air-tightness. Two tubes with a mobility guarantee.

The valve, and why it exists

Dunlop valves are standard on a great many European city and trekking bikes and almost unknown elsewhere. The tip is Presta-shaped, so a Presta pump head fits. The body is wider, so it needs a Schrader-sized rim hole.

That combination means neither a Presta nor a Schrader tube is the right replacement: a Presta tube rattles in the wider hole, and a Schrader tube will not take a Presta pump head.

Checking what you have

Look at the valve currently in the wheel. If it has a knurled nut at the very tip but a body as wide as a car valve, it is Dunlop.

The questions riders ask

What is a Dunlop valve?

Also called a Blitzventil. It has a Presta-shaped tip on a wider body, so it takes a Presta pump head but needs a Schrader-sized rim hole. It remains standard on many European city and trekking bikes.

Which tire sizes does it cover?

Alphatrail names several including 40-609 (27 × 1.5) and 28-622. Check the two ETRTO numbers on your own tire sidewall against the list.
