What the manufacturer publishes

Suitability for all bicycle chains. Cleaning and degreasing of all chains, increasing wear protection. Removal of contaminated chain grease and the dirt bound within it. Prevention of increased drivetrain wear.

Why the degreasing step comes first

A chain accumulates a paste of old lubricant and grit. Adding fresh oil to it does not dilute the paste; it makes more of it. The grinding that wears a drivetrain happens inside the rollers, where that paste sits.

Degreasing removes it. Lubricating afterwards puts clean oil where the paste was. Doing the second without the first is worse than doing nothing.

The aerosol, and its one danger

Spray drives cleaner into the roller gaps, which is exactly what you want. It also travels further than the nozzle suggests, and disc rotors are usually a hand’s width from the chain.

Take the wheel out, or turn the bike so the drivetrain faces away from the discs. Contaminated pads are a replacement, not a clean.

The questions riders ask

Can I spray it near my disc brakes?

No. Degreaser on a rotor or pad is the most common self-inflicted brake problem, and contaminated pads are replaced rather than cleaned by most manufacturers' own instruction. Take the wheel out, or shield the rotor.

Do I need to rinse it off?

Follow the instruction on the can. In general, degreaser is worked in with a brush, rinsed, and the chain dried thoroughly before lubricant goes on — oil over a wet chain traps the water against the metal.
