Antimi USB-C light set, IPX5 review

The best-selling light set in this hub, with a published IPX5 rating, USB-C charging and a rear lamp the maker specifies at a 220° spread.

Our conclusion The set to beat here. Published rating, USB-C, side visibility, and it outsells everything else in the category.

Antimi’s set is the best-selling light in this hub by a wide margin, and the specification explains most of why.

What the manufacturer publishes

StVZO approval. IPX5 water ingress protection. USB-C charging on both lamps. Runtime of 2.2 to 6 hours depending on mode. Three front modes — bright, medium, off — with a red indicator when the battery is low. Front lamp 1.8 × 1.8 × 1.17 inches, rear 1.84 × 1.75 × 1.55 inches, 40 g. A rear lamp with a 220° wide-angle spread.

The two specifications that matter

IPX5 is a defined test, not an adjective. Sets that publish it have been measured against a standard; sets that describe a housing as waterproof have not made that statement. The distinction is worth the small price difference.

The 220° rear spread is the more interesting one. Being seen from directly behind is the easy case. Being seen by a car approaching a junction from the side is where a wide-angle rear lamp does something a narrow bright one does not.

The runtime span

Two point two to six hours is a wide range, and the manufacturer does not break it down mode by mode. Assume the low end for the brightest setting.

USB-C

Small, and genuinely useful: one cable for the lights, the phone and most of everything else bought in the last few years.

What we rate and what we flag

Strengths

  • Rank 13 on the German store when checked — the strongest sales position of any light here
  • A published IPX5 rating rather than a description, and USB-C rather than micro-USB
  • The rear lamp spreads 220°, so it is visible from the side as well as behind

Compromises

  • Runtime stated as 2.2 to 6 hours, which is a wide span across modes
  • A 40 g (1.4 oz) lamp is small enough to be easy to leave in a pocket and lose
  • Not listed on the US market

The questions riders ask

What does a 220° rear beam do?

It throws light sideways as well as backwards, so the lamp is visible to traffic approaching from an angle at a junction — which is where the risk is, rather than directly behind.

What does IPX5 mean?

It is a defined ingress protection level for water jets from any direction. Antimi publishes the figure; several sets in this hub only describe their housings as waterproof, which is not the same statement.
