Muc-Off’s sealant is the best-selling one here, and it publishes the two figures that actually matter.

What the manufacturer publishes

Compatibility for converting to tubeless. Sealing of cracks and holes up to 6 mm (0.24 in) through high-performance molecules. A service life of up to six months in moderate climates. A UV detector dye for identifying holes.

Why the 6 mm (0.24 in) figure is the important one

Sealant performance is usually described in adjectives. A maximum hole size is a number you can plan around: under 6 mm (0.24 in) and the tire seals itself while you ride, over it and you need a plug in your saddle bag.

It is also honest about the limit, which is more useful than an unqualified claim.

The six-month interval

Stated for moderate climates, and shorter in heat. This is the part of tubeless that catches people out — the sealant is a consumable with a schedule, and a tire running dry sealant has no protection at all despite looking identical from outside.

The UV dye

Genuinely clever. A tire losing pressure slowly is hard to diagnose: the hole is tiny and it may only leak under load. A dye that fluoresces under UV shows exactly where.

The tools this needs

Valves with removable cores, so sealant can be injected through the valve. Without them, a top-up means breaking the bead.

The questions riders ask

What does sealing to 6 mm (0.24 in) mean in practice?

A hole up to 6 mm (0.24 in) across is expected to seal without intervention. Larger cuts need a tubeless plug. It is the most useful single figure a sealant can publish, and few do.

What is the UV dye for?

A slow leak that seals imperfectly leaves a trace of sealant at the hole. A UV torch makes it fluoresce, so you can find exactly where the tire is losing air rather than guessing.
