  • Asymmetric lengths, which is what a twist shifter actually needs
  • Alloy screw clamps rather than slide-on, so they cannot rotate in the wet
  • The asymmetric lengths are wrong for a bike without a twist shifter

Best for: A city or trekking bike with a twist shifter, where a symmetric grip pair does not fit.

A grip pair sized for a specific handlebar arrangement, which is more useful than it sounds.

What the manufacturer publishes

An ergonomic design shaped to prevent wrist pain and fatigue. An alloy screw fixing described as robust and secure for long life. Compatibility with handlebars carrying twist shifters. Different lengths — 132 mm (5.20 in) on the left, 98 mm on the right — for a proper fit.

The asymmetry

A twist shifter takes up perhaps 50 mm (1.97 in) of bar. Fitting two identical grips to a bike with one means either the shifter does not fit or the left hand sits on bare bar. Grips sold in matched lengths solve it properly.

The corollary is that they are wrong for a bike with trigger shifters, where two equal grips are what you want.

Lock-on rather than slide-on

The alloy screw clamp is what stops a grip rotating in the wet — the most common complaint about cheap slide-on grips, and a genuine hazard when you are pulling on the bars to climb.

The measurement to take

The bar diameter where the grip sits. Many flat bars are 22.2 mm (0.87 in) there and 31.8 mm (1.25 in) at the stem. Grips are sold to the former.

The questions riders ask

Why are the grips different lengths?

A twist shifter occupies part of the handlebar on one side, so the grip next to it has to be shorter. Prophete states 132 mm (5.20 in) left and 98 mm (3.86 in) right, which is the standard arrangement for a right-hand twist shifter.

What bar diameter do they fit?

Prophete does not publish one. Flat bars are commonly 22.2 mm (0.87 in) at the grip area — measure there rather than at the stem clamp, which is often 31.8 mm (1.25 in).
