What the manufacturer publishes

The cross-brand compatibility

Worth understanding because it cuts against a common assumption. Mixing speed counts does not work — an 11-speed chain is narrower than a 10-speed cassette is spaced for. Mixing brands at the same speed count usually does, and several manufacturers state it. KMC states it here.

A quick link closes by hand, so joining the chain needs no tool at all. It also means a chain that breaks on a ride is a five-minute stop rather than a walk home, provided you carry a spare link matching the speed count.

Note that manufacturers differ on whether their quick links are reusable. Follow what the packaging states rather than a general rule.

Long, deliberately. Chains are shortened to the bike, and the manufacturer’s length-setting method for your derailleur is what governs — not a rule of thumb.
