SKS GERMANY SUPERSHORT mini pump review

A 16.4 cm (6.5 in) mini pump with a reversible head covering all three valve types and a removable aluminum tube that forms a T-handle for pumping.

Our conclusion The one to carry. Short, well made, and the T-handle makes it genuinely usable rather than merely present.

SKS is a German maker with a long presence in cycling accessories, and the SUPERSHORT is its most compact pump.

What the manufacturer publishes

A length of only 16.4 cm (6.5 in), described as very light, compact and high quality. A removable aluminum tube giving an ergonomic T-handle for effective pumping. A reversible valve head covering AV, SV and DV. Manufacture in Germany.

Why the T-handle matters on a small pump

A straight mini pump is held in one hand and pushed with the other, and most of the effort goes into keeping it aligned. A T-handle lets you pull with both hands against the valve, which converts far more of your effort into air. On a pump this small, that is the difference between reaching riding pressure and giving up.

The trade you are accepting

Pump volume. A 16.4 cm (6.5 in) barrel moves very little air per stroke, so a road tire needs several hundred strokes. That is true of every pump this size and it is the price of it fitting in a pocket.

No gauge

There is no gauge here, as on every mini pump in this hub. You inflate by feel at the roadside and check properly at home, which for most riders is exactly right — a mini pump is a way home rather than a way to full pressure.

What we rate and what we flag

Strengths

  • Sixteen point four centimeters — short enough to disappear in a jersey pocket
  • A T-handle rather than a straight barrel, which is far more effective per stroke
  • Rank 585 and available on all six markets

Compromises

  • A small pump volume, so road pressures take many strokes
  • No gauge
  • The reversible head has to be set for the valve type before use

The questions riders ask

How does the T-handle work?

The aluminum tube detaches and mounts crosswise, giving a T-shaped grip. SKS states this allows effective pumping with a better transfer of force than a straight in-line barrel.

Does it fit all valves?

SKS states a reversible valve head covering AV (Schrader), SV (Presta) and DV (Dunlop).

Our score

7.2/ 10

The one to carry. Short, well made, and the T-handle makes it genuinely usable rather than merely present.
