Dr. Wack F100 chain brush review

The entry item here: a two-headed chain brush from an established German care-products maker, designed to work with its own chain cleaner fluids.

Our conclusion A good brush at a fair price. Note that it is a brush and not a kit — the fluid is a separate purchase.

Dr. Wack’s F100 brush is the single-tool entry to this hub, and it is honest about being exactly that.

What the manufacturer publishes

Effective removal of heavy soiling and residues across the whole drivetrain. Designed to work with the F100 chain cleaner and F100 Bio chain cleaner. Two different brush heads with resistant bristles, distributing cleaner evenly. Removal of firmly adhering dirt from the chain, chainrings, sprockets and derailleur, improving chain running.

The two heads

A drivetrain has two shapes of dirt: the chain itself, and the narrow gaps between sprockets. One brush profile cannot reach both, which is why proper drivetrain brushes have a stiff narrow head and a broader one.

What it is not

A kit. The listings above it in this hub bundle brushes with fluid, and several include a clip-on chain scrubber that runs the chain through solvent mechanically. This is a brush, at the price of a brush.

Where it fits

If you already own degreaser, this is the tool you are missing and it costs less than a tube. If you own nothing, one of the kits above it is better value.

What we rate and what we flag

Strengths

  • Two brush heads, so the narrow gaps between sprockets and the chain itself are both covered
  • A specialist care-products maker with a long presence in the German market
  • Listed on all six markets, at the lowest price in this hub

Compromises

  • A brush, not a kit — no fluid is included
  • No chain scrubber, so it is the slow method
  • The manufacturer publishes no bristle material or dimensions

The questions riders ask

Does it include cleaner?

No. It is a brush. Dr. Wack states it is designed to work with its own F100 chain cleaner and F100 Bio chain cleaner, which are separate purchases.

Is a brush enough on its own?

For a chain that is dirty rather than caked, yes, with degreaser. For a neglected drivetrain, a clip-on scrubber does in two minutes what a brush does in fifteen — the kits above this one include one.

Our score

7.2/ 10

A good brush at a fair price. Note that it is a brush and not a kit — the fluid is a separate purchase.
