Choosing between two similar products

When two products look the same, the difference is usually in what one of them declines to tell you.

Compare what each one publishes

Put the two specification lists side by side and look for figures rather than adjectives.

A defined rating — IPX5, 10.3 bar, 425 g (15 oz), 120 TPI — is something the manufacturer measured. “Waterproof”, “powerful”, “lightweight” are not. When one product publishes numbers and the other publishes words, that difference is itself information.

Look for the figure that governs the category

Every category has one number that decides whether the product does its job.

For a light, it is lux and runtime at a usable mode. For a lock, weight. For an inflator, the pressure range and its low end. For a tire, the ETRTO size and the casing. For a rack, the load rating.

If one product publishes it and the other does not, that is usually the answer.

Treat an absent figure as absent

Not as zero, and not as equivalent. Where a manufacturer states nothing, ask the seller rather than assuming parity with a competitor that does state it.

Where sales rank helps and where it does not

A best-seller is a reasonably safe choice: enough people have used it that serious problems would have surfaced. That is a real signal.

It is not a quality ranking. Rank measures visibility, price point and how long a listing has existed as much as merit. A well-specified product at rank 20,000 is not worse than a vague one at rank 200.

The last question

Which one would you rather own in three years? Availability of spares, a manufacturer that will still exist, and a standard that will still be supported are worth more than a small specification advantage today.

The questions riders ask

Is a missing specification a bad sign?

Not automatically, but it is information. A manufacturer that publishes weight, capacity and a defined rating has measured those things; one that publishes adjectives may not have.

How much should sales rank matter?

It measures visibility as much as merit. A best-seller is a safe choice because problems would have surfaced; a low-ranked product is not therefore worse.

What this assumes you ride

Everything above works with what you already own. These are the products we would reach for, and each links to the full review rather than straight to a shop.
