Cleats are a consumable, and replacing them is one of the more overlooked pieces of routine maintenance.

What the manufacturer publishes

A cleat body in polycarbonate and TPU materials, giving high hardness. All screws and washers in heat-treated titanium steel, described as high strength. Suitability for all three-hole road cycling shoes on the market, and 100% compatibility with Shimano SPD-SL pedals and the SM-SH10, SH11 and SH12 patterns. A six-month guarantee or replacement.

Why cleats wear out, and why it matters

You walk on them. Every time you put a foot down on tarmac, the plastic wears. A worn cleat releases unpredictably — sometimes too easily, which is a fall, and sometimes not at all, which is also a fall.

Manufacturers put wear indicators on cleats for that reason. Replacing them is a five-minute job and it is safety-relevant.

The float question

The three Shimano designations describe float: how far your foot rotates before the pedal releases. Six degrees is forgiving and standard; two degrees is more locked in; zero is fixed. Match what you have unless you are deliberately changing.

On position

Cleat position affects knees directly. If you are replacing cleats, mark the position of the old ones before removing them — or take a photograph.

The questions riders ask

What is the difference between SH10, SH11 and SH12?

Float — how far the foot can rotate before releasing. SH11 is the common yellow six-degree cleat, SH12 is blue at two degrees, SH10 is red at zero. Choose the same float as the cleats you are replacing unless you know you want a change.

Will these fit my shoes?

Only three-bolt road shoes. Two-bolt mountain bike and touring shoes take a completely different, recessed cleat.
