Where a lubricant actually ends up

Worth thinking about for a moment. Chain lubricant is applied outdoors, wiped off with a cloth, washed off in rain onto roads, and flung off onto trails. The volume is small per application and constant across millions of cyclists.

A biodegradable formulation is a claim about that rather than about the chain, and it is a reasonable thing to pay a little extra for.

Does biodegradable mean it works less well?

Not necessarily — it is a claim about what happens to the product afterwards rather than about lubrication. Muc-Off describes it as extremely durable and deep penetrating alongside the biodegradability claim.

Should I use all-weather or a seasonal lube?

All-weather is the one-bottle answer. Two bottles — dry for summer dust, wet for winter rain — cost little more and do more for chain life. Neither is wrong.
