Hyakoz’s set is the one that includes the small parts a recable actually needs.

What the manufacturer publishes

Housing treated with a special technology, described as resistant to low temperature and intense heat. Cable and housing in PVC and stainless steel, described as not easily rusting. An adjustable length: front and rear brake cables at 2 m (7 ft), stated as long enough. End caps, ferrules and O-ring donuts included. Suitability across bicycle types.

The small parts

This is the difference. A ferrule caps the end of the housing where it enters a stop; without one the housing frays and the adjustment drifts. End caps stop the inner wire unravelling. Donuts stop the outer rubbing through frame paint.

They are trivially cheap and almost never included, which means a recable normally involves a second order or a compromise.

Stainless wire

The inner cable lives inside a housing where water collects and cannot easily escape. Stainless is what stops it corroding there. It is the single most worthwhile upgrade in a cable set.

Two meters

Long enough for a rear brake or gear cable on any frame, which means offcuts on a small one. That is the right way round — a cable that is too short is scrap.

The questions riders ask

What are the donuts for?

Small rubber O-rings that slide onto the outer housing where it runs along the frame, stopping the cable rubbing paint off the tube. They cost pennies and are almost never included.

Why stainless rather than carbon steel?

Stainless does not corrode inside the housing, which is where cables actually fail. On a bike stored outdoors or ridden in winter, that is the difference between a cable lasting two years and five.
