Shimano’s own pads for its own caliper family, and the best-selling brake product on this site.

What the manufacturer publishes

Two pairs of B05S pads.

That is the entire published specification, and for the manufacturer’s own part it is arguably enough — the part designation is the compatibility statement.

The caliper family

B01S, B03S and B05S is one of the most widely fitted pad shapes in cycling, covering a great many Shimano calipers. The model is printed or cast on the caliper body itself, visible with the wheel out. Matching that code is the whole compatibility question.

Resin, and what it means for you

Quieter than metal, better bite from cold, and it fades sooner on a long descent. On a commuter or a town bike that is the right compound. On a loaded tourer descending an alpine pass it is not.

Replacement, and where this page stops

Shimano publishes a minimum friction material thickness for its pads. Replace at that figure, not when braking feels poor. Pads worn to the backing plate cut into the rotor and turn a cheap job into two. This site reports the manufacturer’s figures and does not set its own — braking is a safety system.

The questions riders ask

Which calipers do these fit?

The B01S/B03S/B05S family, which covers a very large number of Shimano calipers including the MT200, MT400 and M315 groups. Check the model printed on your own caliper body.

Should I choose resin or metal?

Resin is quieter and bites well cold, and fades sooner under sustained heat. For town riding and short descents it is the better choice; for mountains and loaded touring, metal.
