KOHLBURG Large D-lock with cable, 17 × 34.3 cm review

A large D-lock with a 14 mm hardened shackle and an ADFC recommendation stated by the manufacturer, supplied with a 1.7 m cable for the front wheel and accessories.

The bottom line The most lock in this hub, at the most weight and the highest price. If the bike is worth it and the parking is public, this is the honest recommendation.

The KOHLBURG is the only D-lock in this hub, and it is here because the format does something the folding locks cannot.

What the manufacturer publishes

A 14 mm shackle in hardened special steel. A multi-disc cylinder with a T-shaped two-chamber system, presented as resistance to lock-picking. Outer dimensions of 17 × 34.3 cm with an internal clearance of 10.5 × 28 cm. A 1.7 m spiral cable, 8 mm thick. A two-way bracket that accepts the lock from either direction, for round frame tubes within a stated diameter range. An ADFC recommendation.

Why a large D-lock rather than a folding one

A rigid shackle gives an attacker almost nothing to lever against, which is why D-locks give the most resistance per kilogram of any format. The usual complaint is reach, and this one answers it with an unusually large body — 28 cm of internal clearance takes in a frame, a wheel and most stands.

What the cable is and is not

The supplied cable is for the front wheel, a child seat or a helmet. It is a deterrent against opportunists, not a second lock, and it should not be the only thing securing anything you would mind losing.

The trade you are making

Weight and price, both at the top of this hub. That is the whole decision: a lock this substantial is only better than the folding locks below it if it actually leaves the house with you.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • 14 mm hardened shackle, the thickest steel in this hub by a clear margin
  • A large 17 × 34.3 cm body, so it reaches stands that defeat a standard D-lock
  • 1.7 m loop cable included for the front wheel, a child seat or a helmet

Compromises

  • The most expensive lock in this hub
  • A D-lock still only secures what fits inside the shackle, cable aside
  • The two-way bracket suits round frames within a stated diameter range only

Questions people actually ask

What does ADFC recommended mean?

The ADFC is the German cyclists' association. KOHLBURG states that this model is recommended by it; we report that statement as a manufacturer claim and do not assess it.

What is the shackle made of?

The manufacturer states a 14 mm hardened special steel shackle, with a multi-disc cylinder in a T-shaped two-chamber closing system intended to resist lock-picking.
